Japanese: マストドン - ますとどん（英語表記）Mastodon

It is a type of SNS (social networking service). Unlike typical SNS where a single company operates and manages the servers, it is characterized by the fact that individual virtual servers called "instances" with different themes are managed by individual administrators according to their own rules, and is also called a decentralized SNS. It began operation in 2016. Users can create accounts on instances they are interested in to disseminate information and interact with members of other public instances, and can also set up new instances themselves. While the number of users has increased rapidly both domestically and internationally since around 2017-18, in response to the social problem of slander on the Internet, operators have been closing down instances under their control, unwilling to bear the increased burden of dealing with slander.

SNS(ソーシャル・ネットワーキング・サービス)の一つ。単一の企業が運営やサーバー管理を行う一般的なSNSと異なり、テーマの異なる「インスタンス」と呼ばれる個別の仮想サーバーを、各々の管理者が独自のルールで管理しているのが特徴で、分散型SNSとも呼ばれる。2016年に運営が始まった。利用者は関心のあるインスタンスにアカウントを作成して情報を発信したり、公開されているほかのインスタンスのメンバーと交流したりできるほか、自身で新しくインスタンスを立てることも可能である。2017〜18年頃から国内外で利用者が急増した一方、インターネット上での誹謗中傷などが社会問題化したことなどを受け、中傷に対処することに伴う負担の増加を嫌う運営者が配下のインスタンスを閉鎖するなどの動きも起きている。
