A percussion instrument made by hollowing out a tree trunk or log with a thin crack left inside. It is called a split drum. The surface is often carved with animals, fish, crocodiles, etc. It belongs to the idiophone category and is played by striking it with the hand, hitting it with a stick, or poking it. Some are made to produce different sounds depending on where it is struck. The largest is a ceremonial instrument found among the Huitoto people of Colombia, measuring up to 10 meters in length. In Southeast Asia, there are also small, portable versions made of bamboo, and it is thought that historically they developed gradually from the large early versions to smaller ones.
