Born around 1400. Florence? [Died] c. 1469. A sculptor and architect from the Renaissance period in Rome. His real name was Antonio di Pietro Averlino (Averulino). He was commissioned by Pope Eugene IV to create the bronze reliefs for the bronze doors of the old St. Peter's Basilica (→ St. Peter's Basilica) in Rome from 1433 to 1445. From 1451 onwards he was under the patronage of Francesco Sforza in Milan. His architectural works include the Ospedale Maggiore Hospital in Milan (1457-65, completed in the 18th century). His writings include Trattato d'architettura (Treatise on Architecture) (c. 1460-64), which describes his vision for the ideal city "Sforzinda".
