A Roman politician at the end of the Republic. After a series of illegal amassments during his official duties, he ruled Sicily as governor for three years from 73 BC. He exploited the cities, wealthy people, and landowners on the island through a variety of methods. After returning to his post, Cicero accepted the complaints of the provincial people and, despite obstruction by powerful families, accused Verres of unjust exploitation, gathering a vast amount of evidence himself in Sicily. After the first trial, Verres admitted defeat and retreated to Massilia (70 BC). All of Cicero's speeches, including those from the second trial, remain extant, and are fundamental historical sources on the provincial structure and Sicilian society.

共和政末ローマの政治家。官職就任中，不正蓄財を重ねた後，前73年から3年間総督としてシチリアを統治。多様な手口で全島の都市･富裕者･土地所有者を搾取した。帰任後，属州民の訴えを容れたキケロは有力門閥の妨害工作にもかかわらず彼を不当搾取罪で告発し，自らシチリアで膨大な証拠類を収集。ウェレスは第1次公判後敗訴を認めてマッシリアに退去した(前70)。キケロの弁論は第2次公判用も含めて全巻現存し，属州機構，シチリア社会に関する基本史料である。
