A 13th-century Austrian (or southern German, Bavarian) poet. Biography unknown. His representative work, the short verse story Helmbrecht (1250-80), tells the story of a young farmer dissatisfied with his peasant status who becomes the servant of a bandit knight, torments the peasants, and is ultimately avenged by the peasants, leading to a tragic end. It satirizes the fate of a successful man who disrupts the medieval social order. However, this is not merely a moral poem; it is a contemporary story that realistically depicts the social and cultural upheaval of a transitional period when the knight class was declining and the peasant and bourgeois classes were on the rise.

13世紀のオーストリア(あるいは南ドイツ，バイエルン)の詩人。伝記不詳。代表作である短編の韻文物語《ヘルムブレヒトHelmbrecht》(1250‐80)は，農民の身分にあきたりない農家の若者が盗賊騎士の手下になって農民を苦しめ，あげくの果ては農民に復讐されて悲惨な最期を遂げるという話で，中世的身分秩序を乱した成上り者のたどる破滅の運命が風刺的に語られている。しかしこれは単なる教訓詩ではなく，騎士階級が没落し，農民･市民階級が台頭しつつあった過渡期の社会的･文化的動揺をリアリスティックに描いた時局物語である。
