A citrus fruit with a unique shape; a citron variety (illustration). The Japanese name comes from the fact that the fruit resembles a human (Buddha's) hand. It is also called bushkan. It is evergreen and the branches grow well, but it does not become a large tree. The branches are fragile and thorny. The flowers are white with five petals, but variegated varieties are purple. It blooms all year round and the pollen is fertile. The fruit is formed when the carpel (ovary wall) of the pistil is deformed and separated, developing into a finger-like shape, with no flesh. Under good conditions it weighs about 500g. It is generally seedless, with a deep yellow skin and a fragrant scent. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
