His Russian name was Faddei Bellinsgauzen. He was a Russian naval officer and explorer. He explored the coast of Antarctica from 1819 to 1821, and discovered and named Alexander Island and other islands. The Bellingshausen Sea, west of the Antarctic Peninsula, is named after him.
