Hering-Breuer's reflex

It is also called the pulmonary vagal respiratory reflex. It is a reflex in which the expansion of the lungs inhibits the inspiratory center in the medulla oblongata. The lungs contain stretch receptors, which become excited when the lungs expand and send impulses to the medulla oblongata, and the impulses stop when the lungs contract. E. Hering and others believed that this mechanism is responsible for the formation of breathing rhythm. The afferent impulse of this reflex ascends through the vagus nerve, so if the left and right vagus nerves are cut, the breathing rhythm becomes slower and deeper, but breathing does not stop completely.

肺迷走神経呼吸反射ともいう。肺の拡張によって延髄の吸息中枢が抑制される反射。肺には伸張受容器があって，肺が拡張するとそれが興奮して延髄にインパルスを送り，肺が縮小するとインパルスが止む。 E.ヘーリングらは，この機構によって呼吸のリズムが形成されると考えた。この反射の求心性インパルスは迷走神経を通って上行するので，左右の迷走神経を切断すると，呼吸のリズムは遅く，深くなるが，呼吸が完全に停止してしまうことはない。
