Gozzoli - Gozzoli (English spelling)

A painter of the early Italian Renaissance. His real name was Benozzo di Lese. He started out as an apprentice in metalwork and served as assistant to Ghiberti when he was working on the doors of the Florence Baptistery. He then followed Fra Angelico and collaborated with him in Rome and Orvieto. The work that brought him fame was the "Procession of the Three Kings to Bethlehem" (1459-63), which he painted on the wall of the chapel of the Palazzo Medici in Florence, commissioned by the Medici family. This series of paintings, which spread across three walls, well displays his vigorous imagination. After completing the decoration of the Basilica of Sant'Agostino in San Gimignano from 1463 to 1465, he stayed in Pisa for around 17 years and completed a large fresco (damaged in World War II) on the wall of the Campo Santo, depicting a story from the Old Testament. Gozzoli is considered a master genre painter, specialising in elegant and witty narratives rather than pioneering new styles.
