Born: March 19, 1601, Granada Died September 3, 1667. Granada. Spanish painter, sculptor, and architect. He studied painting with Velázquez and F. Pacheco, and sculpture with J. Montañez. Although he lacked the ability to express deep emotions, he excelled in harmonious and graceful depictions of women. In painting, he opened up new possibilities in the depiction of the Virgin Mary and Child, and in sculpture, he set a model with his Immaculate Conception (1655-56). His architectural works include the façade of Granada Cathedral. Carno |
