A perennial grass of the family Poaceae (APG classification: Poaceae). The culm is about 1 meter tall. The leaves are about 40 cm long, and the ligules are wider than they are long and membranous. In May and June, a panicle is formed at the tip of the culm, and spikelets are sparsely borne. The spikelets are narrowly oblong, 5-7 mm long, and contain 3-7 florets. The glumes are short, and the glumes are oval, about 2.2 mm long, with 7-9 veins, and a transparent membranous edge. There is one fleshy, rectangular-shaped lodicule, which corresponds to the perianth. The rachis is curved in a zigzag shape along the keel of the glume, and is lined with florets. It grows on the banks of ponds and waterside areas, and is distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu and the Korean Peninsula. The name comes from the fact that they were used to hold loaches by threading them onto this stem when catching them.
