Bering Strait - Bering Kaikyo (English spelling) Bering Strait

Japanese: ベーリング海峡 - ベーリングかいきょう(英語表記)Bering Strait
Bering Strait - Bering Kaikyo (English spelling) Bering Strait
In Russian, it is called Beringov proliv. It is a strait between the Chukchi Peninsula in the northeastern tip of Russia and the Seward Peninsula in the state of Alaska in the United States. It connects the Chukchi Sea, which is in the Arctic Ocean, with the Bering Sea, which is in the Pacific Ocean. It is 35-86 km wide and 42 m deep at its deepest. It is covered with drift ice from October to August of the following year. It was discovered by Russian explorer S. Dezhnev in 1648, and was named in honor of V. Bering, who passed through it in 1728. The border between the United States and Russia passes through the Diomede Islands (Russian: Geomida or Gvozdev) in the middle of the strait. The Great Diomede (Ratmanov) Island in the west belongs to Russia, and the Little Diomede (Kruzenshtern) Island in the east belongs to the United States. The border line that passes through here also coincides with the International Date Line. During the ice age 20,000 to 35,000 years ago, this strait became land and it is believed that a large-scale human migration from Asia to the Americas took place.
