Ishigaki Eitaro
Born: December 1, 1893, Higashimuro, Wakayama
[Died] January 23, 1958. Tokyo Western-style painter. In 1909, he was called to America by his father who was working away from home, and after studying hard in Seattle, he attended the California State School of Fine Arts. In 1915, he went to New York and studied under painter J. Sloan at the Art Students League. He also joined the Marxism-Leninism Study Group led by Katayama Sen. In 1925, he exhibited his Cubist-style "Whiplash" (Kyoto Museum of Modern Art) at the National Association of Independent Artists exhibition and was recognized. After that, he became more ideologically inclined, and formed friendships with Mexican painters R. Tamayo and J. Orozco, and worked on social themes to express the anger, sadness, and suffering of the masses. He returned to Japan in 1951, but fell ill and died without having been active for much longer. His other major works include "Two-Decker Bus" (1926, National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo) and "Arm" (29, same museum).
