Tetanus - Tetanus

Japanese:
Tetanus - Tetanus

This is a form of muscle contraction. When a muscle or the nerve that controls the muscle is stimulated once, the muscle contracts once in response and then relaxes. This type of contraction is called a twitch. However, when the muscle or the nerve to the muscle is stimulated continuously with an appropriate interval between each, the individual twitches merge and add up, resulting in a large, sustained contraction. This type of contraction is called tetanus. The maximum tension of tetanus is several times that of a twitch, and the contraction state continues as long as the stimulation continues.

When the stimulation frequency is low, the individual twitches do not completely fuse and the contraction curve fluctuates, which is called incomplete tetanus, and when the twitches are completely fused and there is no fluctuation, it is called complete tetanus. The minimum stimulation frequency required to obtain complete tetanus is called the critical fusion frequency, and in the case of frog skeletal muscles, stimulation at 20 Hz or more is required at 15°C.

In the body, skeletal and smooth muscles usually contract by tetanic contraction, whereas cardiac muscle does not undergo tetanic contraction and always performs twitch contractions.
