1913‐1992 Finnish Finno-Ugric scholar. Born on the shores of Lake Inari in northern Finland as the son of a pastor, he became familiar with Lappian language from an early age. As he grew older, he studied at the University of Helsinki and established himself as a specialist in Lappian language, but gradually expanded his research area to cover Finno-Ugric languages in general, becoming a leading authority on the subject. In 1956 he was elected full professor at the University of Helsinki, and in 1964 he was elected a member of the Academy of Finland. His Finno-Ugric Vowel Theory (1946, 54), supported by rigorous comparative linguistic methods, is considered the most plausible hypothesis, and his Finno-Ugric Phonetic and Morphological Structure (1957) is also an important paper that is frequently referenced.
