A slang term for a species of frog belonging to the order Anura in the class Amphibians that has wart-like skin protuberances on the surface of its body. It is often used to refer to the Japanese burrowing frog, but in some regions it is also used to refer to the Japanese toad. There is a legend associated with the name Ibogaeru, such as that if you touch it, you will get a swelling. The secretions from the skin glands of a toad are poisonous, but are not secreted by simply holding it in your hand. In the case of the Japanese burrowing frog, this legend is thought to have come from the dislike of the unique smell of the frog's skin transferring to your hands. [Mitsuru Kuramoto] Distributed in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. The back is brown with small dark spots, and there are many vertical and warty protuberances on the back and the outer surface of the legs. Commonly known as the "warty frog."
