Bérain, Jean
Born: October 28, 1637, Saint-Michel
Died January 24, 1711. Paris. French draftsman, engraver, painter, and designer. He created a unique decorative style during the transition from the Louis XIV to Louis XV styles. He trained under the decorator Le Brun and worked at the Louvre as Louis XIV's court decorative designer. After his teacher's death, he was in charge of the exterior design of all of Louis XIV's ships, as well as crafts and interior decoration, including tapestries, accessories, furniture, costumes, and opera stage designs. The results of his work influenced all of Europe. He used oriental motifs in his decorations and is considered a pioneer of the Rococo style. After his death, his son of the same name (1678-1726), who took over his work, was famous as an engraver.
