After the emperor ascends to the throne, an envoy is dispatched to Ise Shrine and other shrines to make offerings of sacred treasures and offerings. The Shinto Law stipulates that after the emperor ascends to the throne, a sacred offering should be made within three months, but the first appearance of an envoy was in 859 (Jogan 1), and the envoys continued to be sent into the Middle Ages. The event held in 1017 (Kannin 1) is recorded in detail in the Sakyo-ki, and the Goke-jidai contains an example from 1069 (Enkyu 1), from which we can learn about the ceremonies of that time, the shrines that were offered, and the contents of the sacred treasures and offerings.
