A peninsula that juts out into the southern part of Nagasaki Prefecture. It is also called the Nomo Peninsula. It is a long and narrow peninsula that runs from northeast to southwest, with a length of over 20 kilometers and a width of about 6 kilometers, and is narrow at its tip, with the island of Kabashima at its very tip. The peninsula can be traced further to the ocean floor, where the Nagasaki spur (a mountain range-like rise on the ocean floor) reaches about 40 kilometers southwest of Kabashima. The geology is mainly composed of crystalline schist, and it borders the andesite area of the Nagasaki region on the Mogi-Tomachi line. The northern part of the peninsula forms a plateau at an altitude of 400 to 500 meters, and on the plateau, newly erupted basalt forms rises such as Kohachiro-dake. The southern part gradually becomes lower, and a sandbar has developed at Waki-misaki, the tip of the peninsula. In the northwest of the peninsula, the area between Fukabori and Koyagi Island has been reclaimed, and the Nagasaki Outer Port and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' 1 million-ton dock have been built. There are beaches at Kawara on the east coast and Takahama on the west coast, and a subtropical botanical garden at Ikami in Wakimisaki Town. The area has been designated as Nomo Peninsula Prefectural Park. [Yasuyoshi Ishii] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
