A haiku poet from the mid-Edo period. Kagami. His other names were Tokabo, Yabanshi, Kenryu, Shishian, and Renjibo. He was from Mino Province (Gifu Prefecture). He entered a Zen temple in his hometown as a child, but left the mountains at the age of 19 and traveled around. In 1690 (Genroku 3), at the age of 26, he became a disciple of Basho in Omi, and Basho was so beloved for his erudition and talent that he attended him in his later years. After his master's death, he made many pilgrimages from his hometown of Mino to Hokuetsu and Kyushu, contributing greatly to the spread of Sho-style haiku. However, in 1711 (Shotoku 1), he falsely claimed to have died and published his own "Record of the End of Life," which caused him to be misunderstood and resented by the public. The Shiko school is called the Mino school, but its style was based on simple conversation, and included simple, vulgar, and light-hearted arguments, which were well received by the masses. As a haiku theorist, he wrote many books on haiku, such as "Kuzu no Matsubara," "Zokugoron," "Twenty-Five Articles," and "Ten Treatises on Haiku," and well organized Sho-style haiku theory. His grave is in front of the Daichiji Temple in Yamagata, Gifu City.
