It is surrounded by the tropical rainforests of the Benin River basin, which flows through the northern wetlands of the Niger Delta. Its economy is centered on the cultivation of rubber and palm trees, the harvesting and processing of timber, and the production of furniture and carpets. As the capital of the Benin Kingdom, which emerged around the 13th century, it prospered from the 14th to 17th centuries, and from the second half of the 15th century it was involved in the trade of slaves, ivory, pepper, and other goods.
