This first-class river originates near Suzuka Pass at the southern end of the Suzuka Mountains in northern Mie Prefecture, flows east, passes through Kameyama City and Suzuka City, and empties into Ise Bay in the southern part of Yokkaichi City. It has a length of 38 kilometers and a drainage area of 323 square kilometers, collecting tributaries such as the Utsube River, Onbe River, and Anraku River. The upper reaches of each tributary are rich in beautiful valleys that carve into the Suzuka Mountains, and the middle reaches are covered with hilly plateaus and terraces, and are the prefecture's leading producer of tea and flowering trees. The gently meandering flow of the river is featured in many poems, including one in the Manyoshu: "Who crossed the Suzuka River's eighty rapids? Why is there no wife to cross it at night?" (Volume 12, author unknown). [Tatsuo Ito] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
