A city in the southeastern part of the Kunisaki Peninsula in Oita Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1955. Most of the city is hilly, with flat land in the Yasaka River basin and at its mouth. The city center has developed as a castle town since the Middle Ages. Morie Port prospered through the export of salt and blue-green algae until the railway was opened. It is served by the Nippo Main Line and the Oita Airport Toll Road. Since the mid-1980s, cutting-edge technology industries have been moving into the city, and the amount of industrial shipments has grown significantly, especially in the electrical equipment sector. Mandarin orange cultivation is thriving, and there is also a juice factory. Greenhouse strawberries, kiwifruit, and tea are also grown. 大分県国東(くにさき)半島南東部の市。1955年市制。大部分は丘陵地で八坂川の流域と河口に平地が開ける。中心市街は中世以来城下町として発達。守江港は鉄道開通まで塩,青表の移出で栄えた。日豊本線,大分空港有料道路が通じる。1980年代半ばから先端技術産業の進出が続き,電機分野を中心に工業出荷額が大きく伸長している。ミカン栽培が盛んで,ジュース工場もある。ハウスイチゴ,キウイフルーツ,茶の栽培も行われる。2005年10月速見郡山香町,西国東郡大田村を編入。280.08km2。3万2083人(2010)。
