Nilgai - Nirugai (English spelling) nilgai

It is a type of antelope in the order Artiodactyla and family Bovidae. It is also called the horse antelope. It is found in the Indian peninsula, living in grasslands and low-forested plains in hilly areas dotted with trees. It reaches a shoulder height of 1.3 to 1.4 meters and weighs about 270 kilograms. Only males have horns, which are 20 to 30 centimeters long. Body color varies depending on sex and age, adult males are gray-black, while females and young males are yellowish brown. Males usually live alone, while females and calves live in small groups of 4 to 10. They eat leaves, fruits, and grass in the morning and evening. They have a keen sense of smell and eyesight, and when they spot an enemy, they can run as fast as a horse even on rocky ground. They usually mate in March or April, and the gestation period is around 247 days. They give birth to 1 to 2 calves in November or December. Most calves are two, and they live for about 15 years.

哺乳(ほにゅう)綱偶蹄(ぐうてい)目ウシ科の動物。アンテロープの一種。ウマカモシカともいう。インド半島に分布し、樹木の点在する丘陵地の草原や低木林のある平原に生息する。肩高1.3～1.4メートル、体重270キログラムほどに達する。角は雄だけにあり、長さ20～30センチメートル。体色は性や年齢によって異なり、雄の成獣は灰黒色、雌と若い雄は黄褐色である。通常、雄は単独、雌と子は4～10頭の小群で生活し、朝夕に木の葉や果実、草などを食べる。嗅覚(きゅうかく)と視覚が鋭く、敵を発見すると岩石地でもウマ並みに走る。交尾期は普通3～4月で、妊娠期間247日前後。11～12月に1産1～2子を産む。子は多くは2子で、寿命は15年ほどである。
