Japanese: ゲンゴロウ(源五郎) - ゲンゴロウ(英語表記)Cybister japonicus
Gengoro (Cybister japonicus) - Gengoro (English spelling)
An insect of the Dytisciidae family in the order Coleoptera (illustration). Its flat body spreads backwards, its back is black with a greenish-green tint, and its sides are edged with yellowish brown. Its body length is 35-40 mm. The tip of the male's front legs (tarsus) is wide, and the underside is a sucker, making it convenient for holding the female during mating. It is found throughout Japan, as well as in Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula, China, Siberia, and other areas. It was commonly found in ponds, swamps, and quiet rivers from plains to mountains, but its numbers have decreased dramatically due to development and the effects of pesticides.
