Japanese: カワセミ(翡翠) - カワセミ

A species of bird in the family Alcedinidae in the order Coraciiformes, or more broadly, a general term for birds in the same family. The common kingfisher Alcedo atthis (illustration) is about 16 cm long. It is a beautiful water bird that has been loved since ancient times. Its back is dark green-blue, while the lower back and below are a particularly vivid green-blue, and the eyes, ear feathers, and belly are chestnut brown. It has the widest distribution of any bird in the family Alcedinidae, found in the subarctic Eurasian continent, most of Africa, and as far east as the Solomon Islands.
