A town in the southwestern corner of Vermont, USA, east of the Green Mountains. Population 15,737 (2000). Founded in 1761. The town is thriving in industries such as electronic devices, batteries, furniture, and paper products, and there are many ski resorts nearby. It was the site of the Battle of Bennington, in which General John Stark defeated the British army in August 1777, and the town preserves a monument over 90 meters high, a church (built in 1806), historical buildings, and the Bennington Museum, which collects relics from that time. It is also the home of Bennington College (established in 1932). [Kazuyo Sakuno] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
