The capital of Botswana. Formerly called Gaberones. Located in southeastern Botswana, near the border with South Africa. The administrative center of the British Protectorate of Bechuanaland was in Mafeking, South Africa, but the capital was moved to Gaberones in 1965, the year before independence. There is a railway line from Cape Town, South Africa to Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe, and an airport. Most of the inhabitants are Tlokwa people. There is the University of Botswana and a museum.
