In Japan, their emergence has long been considered part of the biological calendar, and their swarms are said to be a sign of rain, and are familiar names such as "mosquito mochitsuki" and "katsubo kometsuki." There is even a proverb that goes, "The rice cake pounding of planthoppers brings rain."
