Fish are finned vertebrates that live in water, breathe primarily through gills, and have fins. Taxonomically, the phylum Vertebrata is divided into the superclass Pisces and the superclass Tetrapoda, with the superclass Pisces often being further divided into the classes Agnatha (gnatha), Acanthodii (acanthofish), Placodermi (placoderms), Chondrichthyes (chondrichthyes), and Osteichthyes (bony fish). The oldest fish fossils in the history of the Earth have been found in strata from the Late Cambrian Period. …
