A British orientalist. Born in London. Graduated from Cambridge University. Worked at the British Museum from 1912 to 1930, after which he left his job to pursue an academic career, but had little contact with the outside world, except for a few friends. He translated many Japanese and Chinese classics and wrote many treatises on them. His translations, in particular, made a deep impression on readers, making full use of his rich appreciation and excellent style. It is well known that his translations of Chinese poetry influenced contemporary poets Yeats and Ezra Pound. His major translations include "One Hundred and Seventy Chinese Poems" (1919), "The Tale of Genji" (1925-32), "The Analects" (1938), "The Book of Songs" (1937), and "Three Ways of Thought in Ancient China" (1939). (1937)、『Three Ways of Thought in Ancient China』(1939)などがある。
