…The entry for Manji 1 (1658) in the Takee Nenpyo (Buke Nenpo) states that “in Edo, the number of hairdressers was set at 808, one for each town,” and the following year, 600 licenses were issued, and at the same time, masters were required to pay 2 ryo and apprentices 1 ryo each year. The license, called Sakikamiyui-satsu, began in 1640 (Kan'ei 17), and at that time hairdressers were required to maintain and watch the Goniyuyobashi (known as Kougibashi in Osaka), but after the Great Fire of Meireki (1657), they made the aforementioned payment, and after that, they were required to rush to the magistrate's office and other places in the event of a fire to retrieve important documents. It is said that they also cooperated in criminal investigations, as it was easy to obtain information through their profession. …

…《武江年表》万治1年(1658)の条に〈江戸中髪結株一町に一ヶ所づゝ八百八株に定まる〉とあり，翌年600枚の鑑札が下付され，同時に年ごとに師匠は2両，弟子は1両を上納するようになった。これよりさき髪結札と呼ぶ鑑札は1640年(寛永17)に始まり，そのときの髪結は御入用橋（ごにゆうようばし）(大坂では公儀橋（こうぎばし）)の保守･監視を義務づけられていたが，明暦の大火(1657)後前記のように金納し，そののちは出火のさい町奉行所などにかけつけて重要書類を持ち出すことなどが義務づけられていた。また職業上情報を得やすいため，犯罪捜査にも協力したという。…
