Year of death: January 17, 1580 (February 2, 1580) Year of birth: Eiroku 1 (1558) A military commander in the Sengoku period. His father was Nagakatsu. He was a member of the Akamatsu clan, the guardian of Harima Province (Hyogo Prefecture), and served Oda Nobunaga in 1575. He had intended to be the vanguard of an attack on the Chugoku Mori clan, but when Hashiba (Toyotomi) Hideyoshi was appointed commander-in-chief and entered Harima in the sixth year of the same year, Nagaharu barricaded himself in Miki Castle and rebelled against Nobunaga. One theory is that this was due to slander from his uncle, Yoshiaki, or that he was responding to the Mori clan, with whom he had a cooperative relationship. Hideyoshi attacked Miki Castle together with Oda Nobutada, but powerful clans in eastern Harima, the Hatano clan of Tanba, and Araki Murashige of Settsu, who had also rebelled against Nobunaga, all responded to Nagaharu. At first, Miki Castle was held for nearly two years thanks to the provision of military supplies from the Mori Army, but after Murashige was defeated, Hideyoshi gradually captured the secondary castles, isolating Miki Castle and starving it out, leading to many people starving to death in the castle. Nagaharu committed suicide with his brothers, on the condition that the lives of the castle soldiers be spared.
