A city in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship in southeastern Poland. Located 70 km east of Krakow, at the northern foot of the East-West Beskid Mountains, which make up the Carpathian Mountains, it developed on a plateau overlooking the valley of the Vistula River. Population: 121,828 (2000). Located on an industrial artery to Ukraine, it is an industrial city with a thriving traditional light industry of textiles, food, timber, and leather, as well as modern industries of machinery, oil refining, and cast iron. Founded in 1330 as a fortress city by the Tarnowski family. It suffered a major fire but was rebuilt, and became a center of religious culture in the 15th and 16th centuries. There are many historical buildings, including the cathedral and town hall.

ポーランド南東部、マウォポルスカ県の都市。クラクフの東70キロメートル、カルパティア山脈を構成する東西ベスキド山脈の北麓(ほくろく)に位置し、ビスワ川の谷を見下ろす台地上に発達した。人口12万1828(2000)。ウクライナへの産業動脈上にあり、伝統的な繊維、食品、木材、皮革の軽工業に加えて、機械、石油精製、鋳鉄の近代工業が発展する工業都市である。1330年タルヌフスキ家の城塞(じょうさい)都市として建設。大火にあったが再建され、15~16世紀には宗教文化の中心地となった。大聖堂や市庁舎など、歴史的建造物が多い。
