A city in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship in southeastern Poland. Located 70 km east of Krakow, at the northern foot of the East-West Beskid Mountains, which make up the Carpathian Mountains, it developed on a plateau overlooking the valley of the Vistula River. Population: 121,828 (2000). Located on an industrial artery to Ukraine, it is an industrial city with a thriving traditional light industry of textiles, food, timber, and leather, as well as modern industries of machinery, oil refining, and cast iron. Founded in 1330 as a fortress city by the Tarnowski family. It suffered a major fire but was rebuilt, and became a center of religious culture in the 15th and 16th centuries.
