Sakura shrimp (Sakura ebi) - Sergia lucens

Japanese: サクラエビ(桜蝦) - サクラエビ（英語表記）Sergia lucens

A small shrimp belonging to the family Primacidae of Crustacea, it is eaten raw and is used in various processed products (illustration). It is 4 to 5 cm long. Its carapace is thin and looks pink due to the many scattered chromatophores. It also has many light-emitting organs on the ventral and lateral sides of its body. Its rostrum is short and triangular, with a single spine on its upper edge. Its second antennae are remarkably long, and for about 5 cm from the base, it is somewhat thick and faces diagonally forward. From there, the tips are thin and extend backward, with a pair of soft hairs on the underside of each segment, making them look feather-like. They swim slowly in schools in the mid-levels at depths of 400 to 600 meters, and the long whip of the second antennae helps them maintain balance.

甲殻綱サクラエビ科に属する小型のエビで，生食のほか各種の加工品として利用される（イラスト）。体長4～5cm。甲は薄く，散在する多数の色素胞のために桜色に見える。また，腹面や体側に多数の発光器がある。額角は三角形で短く，上縁に1本のとげがある。第2触角が著しく長く，基部から5cmほどはやや太くて斜め前方を向く。それより先は細くて後方にのび，各節ごとに下側に1対の軟らかい毛があり羽毛状に見える。水深400～600mの中層を群れをなしてゆっくり泳いでいるが，第2触角の長い鞭がバランスをとるのに役だっている。
