It was one of the household institutions for the retired emperor and nobles. In the Shukaisho, the ben'yosho is listed as one of the offices within the Incho, along with the Shojisho, Saburaidokoro, Gofukudokoro, Mizushidokoro, Shinmotsudokoro, Fudono, Tokoro no Shu (Kurando), Mushadokoro, Mizuishinjo, and Miumaya. It seems that the ben'yosho of the Incho had an official position of Nen'yo, and the entry for April 27, leap year 4, 1246 in the Yokoki indicates that a person named Shigetoshi was appointed to replace the ben'yosho Kagesuke, who had passed away.
