A city in southern Gifu Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It occupies a major part of the Ota Basin where the Hida River and Kiso River meet, and the city center developed as a post town on the Nakasendo road and as a port on the Kiso River. The Takayama Main Line passes through the city, and it branches off from the Nagaragawa Railway and the Taita Line, and national highways 21, 41, 248, and 418 run through it. With good transport links, large factories of electrical equipment, general machinery, and metal product factories have set up and are developing. 岐阜県南部の市。1954年市制。飛騨川と木曾川とが合流する太田盆地の主要部を占め,中心市街は中山道の宿場町,木曾川河港として発展。高山本線が通じ,長良川鉄道,太多(たいた)線を分岐し,国道21,41,248,418号線が走る。交通の便に恵まれて電気機器の大工場や一般機器,金属製品の工場も進出し,発展している。北方の丘陵地ではナシ・カキ栽培や酪農も盛ん。74.81km2。5万4729人(2010)。
