Born: November 13, 1782, Värmland, Tyrseld [Died] November 2, 1846, Östravös. Swedish poet. Born as the youngest child of a poor pastor, he studied at the University of Lund and became a professor of Greek at his alma mater at the age of 29. At the age of 42, he was appointed bishop of Växjö in Småland. In 1840, his depression worsened and he became delirious, and in his later years he vacillated between insanity and sanity, dying in a psychiatric hospital. His representative works include the long poem Svea (1811), which inspired patriotism in the entire nation, and the epic poem Fritiofs saga (25), based on the ancient Icelandic sagas.
