Battambang. A city in western Cambodia, about 250 km northwest of the capital, Phnom Penh. It developed as a commercial center mainly due to the activities of Chinese residents, and is located on the fertile rice-growing area on the northwest shore of Tonle Sap Lake. It distributes agricultural products such as rice, cotton, cacao, jute, sugarcane, and cardamom. It is connected to Phnom Penh by rail and road. Population: 45,000 (1987 estimate).
