Marius Petipa

1818‐1910
French dancer and choreographer. Born in Marseilles to parents who were choreographers and actresses. While active in Europe and the US as a dancer and choreographer, he was invited to St. Petersburg, Russia in 1847, where he worked as the first male dancer at the Imperial Theater. He served as the principal ballet master at the Imperial Mariinsky Theater from 1869 to 1903, and in later years became a Russian citizen. He came to be known as Petipa, a French pronunciation of his name. With his extensive knowledge and education in Western classical dance and ethnic and folk dance, he nurtured many talented students under his tutelage, and introduced innovative techniques to his choreography and direction.

フランス生れの舞踊家，振付師。振付師の父と女優の母を両親としてマルセイユに生まれる。踊り手，振付師として欧米で活躍中，1847年ロシアのペテルブルグに招かれ，帝室劇場の男性第一舞踊手として活躍。1869‐1903年帝室マリインスキー劇場の首席バレエ･マスターをつとめ，晩年ロシアに帰化し，その名もフランス読みのプティパから，ペチパと呼ばれるようになった。西欧の古典舞踊および民族･風俗舞踊に関する該博な知識と教養によって，その門下から幾多の英才を育て，振付演出においても斬新な技芸を導入。
