1818‐1910 French dancer and choreographer. Born in Marseilles to parents who were choreographers and actresses. While active in Europe and the US as a dancer and choreographer, he was invited to St. Petersburg, Russia in 1847, where he worked as the first male dancer at the Imperial Theater. He served as the principal ballet master at the Imperial Mariinsky Theater from 1869 to 1903, and in later years became a Russian citizen. He came to be known as Petipa, a French pronunciation of his name. With his extensive knowledge and education in Western classical dance and ethnic and folk dance, he nurtured many talented students under his tutelage, and introduced innovative techniques to his choreography and direction.
