1897‐1970 A representative contemporary Norwegian novelist and poet, he consistently wrote works with strong symbolic overtones. Works such as "Seeds" (1940) and "The House in the Dark" (1945), which reflect the conditions of fascist rule, "Spring Night" (1954), which depicts the process of human maturation, "The Birds" (1957), a story of a brother and sister told through the pure psychology of a mentally retarded child, and "The Ice Castle" (1963), which tells of a desire for liberation from the "ice" lurking within the soul, have made him one of the greatest contemporary Nordic novelists. His collections of poetry, beginning with "The Fountain" (1946), are rich in conciseness and expressionistic power. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
