A representative contemporary Norwegian novelist and poet, he consistently wrote works with strong symbolic overtones. Works such as "Seeds" (1940) and "The House in the Dark" (1945), which reflect the conditions of fascist rule, "Spring Night" (1954), which depicts the process of human maturation, "The Birds" (1957), a story of a brother and sister told through the pure psychology of a mentally retarded child, and "The Ice Castle" (1963), which tells of a desire for liberation from the "ice" lurking within the soul, have made him one of the greatest contemporary Nordic novelists. His collections of poetry, beginning with "The Fountain" (1946), are rich in conciseness and expressionistic power.

現代ノルウェーの代表的な小説家，詩人。一貫して象徴的色彩の濃い作品を書いた。ファシズム支配の状況を反映した《種子》(1940)，《闇の中の家》(1945)，人間的成熟過程を描く《春宵》(1954)，精神遅滞児の清純な心理を通した姉弟の物語《鳥》(1957)，魂内部にひそむ〈氷〉からの解放を願う《氷の城》(1963)などは，彼を現代北欧の最高の小説家の一人にした。《泉》(1946)に始まる数冊の詩集は簡潔さと表現主義的力に富む。
