Hermai (English spelling)

Japanese: ヘルマイ（英語表記）hermai

A square pillar with a bust of the god Hermes, erected in large numbers on street corners, doorways, and sanctuaries in Greek cities. It is translated as "Hermes pillar." It has a phallus (phallus) in the middle and sometimes has a moral instruction carved into it. It was used as a guidepost or boundary marker. In 415 B.C., on the eve of the departure of the Sicilian expedition, an incident occurred in Athens in which all of these pillars in the city were vandalized. This act of blasphemy was seen as an ominous omen for the expedition, and caused shock and dismay among the people.

ギリシア諸都市の街角，家々の戸口，聖域などに数多く建立された，ヘルメス神の胸像を戴く四角柱石。〈ヘルメス柱〉と訳される。その中ほどに男根(ファロス)が付けられており，また道徳的教訓の辞が彫られていることもある。道標や境界標として使用された。前415年，シチリア遠征出航前夜アテナイにおいて，市中のこの柱像がことごとく毀損されるという事件が起こったが，この瀆神行為は遠征に対する不吉な前兆とみなされ，人々に驚愕と動揺をもたらした。
