A square pillar with a bust of the god Hermes, erected in large numbers on street corners, doorways, and sanctuaries in Greek cities. It is translated as "Hermes pillar." It has a phallus (phallus) in the middle and sometimes has a moral instruction carved into it. It was used as a guidepost or boundary marker. In 415 B.C., on the eve of the departure of the Sicilian expedition, an incident occurred in Athens in which all of these pillars in the city were vandalized. This act of blasphemy was seen as an ominous omen for the expedition, and caused shock and dismay among the people. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
