Hesokuri generally refers to assets that are private to the public and somewhat secret to the public. The word hesokuri is used nationwide, but there are various regional variations, such as Horita, Homachi, Shingye, Shingai, and Hekozeni. It is said that the word hesokuri may have come from the fact that women would keep some of their hemp cloth for themselves when purchasing clothing. In other words, hesokuri is thought to have started with secretly saving a portion of a family's public assets. However, many private assets were publicly recognized and carried out openly.
