Japanese: コンパス - compass

A compass. A must-have for when you fly through clouds or lose your direction. Normally, you don't fly through clouds, but it's not uncommon to accidentally fly through clouds or for gas (fog) to suddenly appear. It's also useful for finding out the wind direction and terrain when you go to other flight areas. There are needle-type (magnetic) compasses, electronic compasses, and GPS compass mode. Needle-type and electronic compasses show the current north, while GPS shows the north relative to the trajectory, so you need to be careful of the difference. Also, it's better to think that needle-type ones, such as the flat type used for orienteering and those that can be bought for a few hundred yen at car shops, do not work in the air. In the case of a paraglider moving in three dimensions, the pointer may shake a lot or spin around freely, which may cause you to panic.

方位磁石。雲中飛行や方向を見失った時の為の必需品である。通常、雲中飛行はしないものであるが、誤って入ってしまったり、突然ガス（霧）が発生する事も少なくない。また他所のフライトエリアに行って風向きや地形を知る為にも役立つ。コンパスは針式（磁石式）のものから電子コンパスまたＧＰＳのコンパスモードなどがある。針式や電子コンパスは現在の北を示すのに対し、ＧＰＳは軌跡に対して北を示し、その違いに注意が必要。また、針式は、オリエンテーリングなどで使われる平面タイプのものやカーショップなどで数百円程度で買えるものは空中では機能しないと考えた方が良い。３次元を移動しているパラグライダーの場合、指針が大きく揺れたり、空回りしてしまい、かえってパニックに陥ることにもなりがねない。
