A type of puppet theater. It was first seen in the "Kanmon Gyoki" and "Mansai Jugō Nikki" entries for 1432, where it is mentioned as an "Ayatsuri lantern," but its actual form is unknown. The following three types remain, and none of them are similar to any other. (1) Saeki Lantern Puppets (Hiedano, Kameoka City, Kyoto Prefecture) A palace-shaped paper stage measuring approximately one ken square is lit with candles, and small puppets measuring around 20 centimeters are manipulated with sticks and a shingushi to the rhythm of Gidayu (a traditional Japanese chant) (August 14th). (2) Yame Fukushima Lantern Dolls (Fukushima Honmachi, Yame City, Fukuoka Prefecture) A two-story stage with a width of seven ken is decorated with lanterns, and puppet plays such as "Tamamo-no-Mae" and "Yoshinoyama" are performed with shamisen and musical instruments (September 21st to 23rd). The size of the dolls is about 80 centimeters. After the dedication of a thousand lanterns in 1760 (10th year of the Horeki era), the first dolls were made around 1768 (5th year of the Meiwa era). It is a nationally designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. (3) Annaka Nakajuku Lantern Doll (Nakajuku, Annaka City, Gunma Prefecture) A small lantern is placed inside the body of a paper doll about 60 to 70 centimeters in size, making the doll stand out. Also known as a "lantern doll," the background is also made to stand out by placing lights behind it. The puppet is controlled by a special string manipulation technique. To the accompaniment of flutes and drums, plays such as "Tawara Kozo," "Umanori Kozo no Kago Nuke," and "Kiyohime Tightrope Walking" are performed (irregularly). It first began around 1656 (Meireki 2). It is a nationally designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property.
