...When Robert Proctor (1868-1903), librarian at the British Museum, applied the natural history research methods of these pioneers to return the approximately 8,000 incunabula (early published books) in the museum's collection to their corresponding years, places, and printers, bibliography was said to have almost completed its function. When the University of Oxford published Ronald McKerrow's (1872-1940) "Introduction to Bibliography for Literary Students" in the autumn of 1927, a lively debate on the purpose and content of bibliography unfolded in the weekly "Curatorial Supplement" of The Times for about six months, which helped to clarify the nature of bibliography. Thus, at least in Britain, bibliography is defined as "the study of the material transmission of literary and other documents, with the ultimate aim of solving, so far as the material means of transmission can be effected, problems of origin, history, and text" (W. W. Gregg's lecture "The Present State of Bibliography" at the British Bibliographical Society, October 1930). *Some of the terminology that mentions "McKerrow, R." is listed below. … … ※「McKerrow,R.」
