Spanish architect. Born in Trujillo. Directly introduced European architectural theories, methods, techniques, and styles to 16th-century Latin America. The first person to work as a private citizen without belonging to a religious order or government. He stayed in Mexico from 1573 to 1580, and designed the Puebla Cathedral (1575) and other buildings. After staying in Quito, Ecuador, from 1582 he designed the cathedrals of Lima and Cusco in Peru. His works were based on pure Renaissance theory rather than the Plateresque style. [Kato Kaoru]

スペインの建築家。トルヒーリョ生れ。16世紀のラテン･アメリカにヨーロッパの建築理論や工法，技術，様式を直接に伝えた。修道会や政府に属さず一個の民間人として働いた最初の人物。1573‐80年メキシコに滞在し，プエブラ大聖堂(1575)等を設計。エクアドルのキトに滞在後，82年からペルーのリマとクスコの両大聖堂を設計。プラテレスコ様式よりも純粋ルネサンス理論に基づく作品を残した。【加藤薫】
