A deciduous shrub of the Oleaceae family. It is also called Itachihaze. Native to China, it is planted in gardens for decorative purposes. It grows to a height of about 3m, with pale yellowish brown bark and vine-like drooping upper branches. Young branches have ridges and a hollow pith. The leaves are opposite, elliptical and sawtoothed. They often have leaves that branch into a trifoliate compound leaf shape. In early spring, many yellow tubular flowers bloom before the leaves appear. It is famous as a flower that heralds the arrival of spring. The tip of the corolla is deeply lobed into four parts and opens in a cross shape. Similar species include Korean Forsythia koreana and Chinese Forsythia viridissima , while Yamato Forsythia japonica rarely grows wild on limestone land in the Chugoku region of Japan.
