Born: December 16, 1836 in Riga Died March 25, 1907. German surgeon born in Wiesbaden, Lithuania. In 1882 he became professor of surgery at the University of Berlin. He contributed greatly to the development of brain surgery, and his works Die Lehre von den Kopfverletzungen (1880) (Lectures on Head Injuries) and Die Chirurgische Behandlung der Hirnkrankheiten (1888) (Surgical Treatment of Brain Diseases) are considered classics in the field of brain surgery. He also made many contributions to sterilization methods for surgical procedures, and it is said that he was the first to use mercury to disinfect surgical instruments. In 1886 he introduced the steam sterilization method for surgical instruments, bandages, and clothing, and also devised an incision method for kidney removal.
