Hot Laboratory (English)

Japanese: ホットラボ（英語表記）hot laboratory

A laboratory where strong radiation can be handled safely. A laboratory where the strength of the radiation source is 50mCi (millicuries) or more, i.e. 1.85× ¹⁰⁹ Bq (becquerels) or more, is often called a hot lab. The storage room for radioactive materials is sufficiently shielded and protected, and is airtight, and experiments are carried out using a remote-controlled device such as a magic hand. There are nearly 2000 hot labs in Japan, including the Japan Atomic Energy Agency's Oarai Research and Development Center in Oarai Town, Ibaraki Prefecture.

強力な放射線を安全に扱える実験室のこと。放射線源の強さが 50mCi (ミリキュリー) 以上，すなわち 1.85× 10 ⁹Bq (ベクレル) 以上になる実験室を，ホットラボということが多い。放射性物質の貯蔵室は十分に遮蔽・防護され気密状態になっており，マジックハンドのような遠隔操作装置を使って実験する。日本でも茨城県大洗町の日本原子力研究開発機構大洗研究開発センターをはじめ，大小 2000ヵ所近くある。
